Fathers, Infertility, Crowd-Sourcing and ICLW

If you are new to my blog and stopping by for International Comment Leaving Week (ICLW), I am the proud mama of an almost 5 year old boy who was conceived with love and assisted reproductive technology (ART). This is my infertility story.

vancouver mom bloggerI have become a passionate advocate for families who are struggling with infertility and IVF and write about that under the category Infertility Tales. My most recent blog on this topic was an interview with my husband where he really opened up and spoke frankly about male infertility and fatherhood in Infertility Happens to Fathers Too.

There is such a rich community of moms and mothers to be speaking out about the roller coaster ride of infertility but few men. My husband’s answers were an eye opener even for me. I learned the value of communicating with and supporting our men throughout this journey and that they are there for us in ways we didn’t even realize.

There is also a recent story in our local paper The Vancouver Sun about an infertile man who didn’t have the money for IVF so he and his wife raised the money to afford just one attempt through friends, family and crowd-sourcing. This just breaks my heart. When will governments step up to make sure that families facing infertility have medical coverage for the costs so they have the same opportunity to have babies that everyone else has?

That’s my rant for the day. I don’t even know where that came from. To the couples out there dealing with infertility today, you are not alone.
